Arusha region is one among the 31 regions of Tanzania, and is second in wealth in the country. It is bordering with KilimanjaroManyara , Shinyanga,Singida and Mara regions, and bordering with Kenya on the northeast. The region has the following districtsMonduli , Longido , Meru , Arusha Rural , Arusha , Ngorongoro and Karatu. Arusha city is a regional and district headquarters, as well as the East African Community headquarters.  It is Located below Mount Meru on the eastern edge of the eastern branch of the Valley, and It is the starting point of many a memorable safari.

Arusha Region is the main tourist destination in Tanzania Mainland and Tourism is a major part of its economy, it is close to the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation AreaLake Manyara National ParkOlduvai GorgeTarangire National ParkMount Kilimanjaro, and Arusha National Park on Mount Meru.

Arusha’s population comprises of different nationalities. It is a multicultural city with a majority Tanzanian population of mixed backgrounds: indigenous African, Arab-Tanzanian and Indian-Tanzanian population, plus a small European and an American minority population. It’s also a melting pot of Iraqw, Hadzabe, Maasai, Swahili and dozens of other indigenous and ethnic cultures. Religions of the Arusha people include ChristianityIslam, Sikhism and Hinduism.

The city hosts the National Natural History Museum, which used to be a fort that was built by the Germans during the early 1900’s, it contains three exhibits on early man, plants and animals of the region, and the history of the city, A small museum adjacent to the Uhuru monument displays information about the proceedings of the Arusha Declaration in 1967, Masai Market which is the local handicrafts and curios market, and the Cultural Heritage Center which has a large handicrafts store, Tanzanite, and art gallery.

Arusha is also known for the following:

  • The centre of Africa. The clock tower which is a common meeting place for both locals and tourists in Arusha, is located exactly halfway between Cairo and Cape Town.  During postcolonial rule, this monumental clock tower was seen as a sign of the middle of the Old British Empire.
  • The “cradle of Humankind”. The historic site “Olduvai Gorge” which is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, holds the earliest evidence of the existence of human beings in the world. This site has produced a large number, as well as some of the oldest, hominid fossils ever found, some dating back as far as 3.5 million years ago. This glorious place is located on the outskirts of Arusha, between Serengeti national park and the Ngorongoro crater.
