Manyara

Manyara Region is one among the 31 regions of Tanzania. Manyara region is bordered by Arusha region to the north, Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions to the east, Dodoma region to the south and Singida and Shinyanga regions to the west. Manyara region has the following districts: Mbulu , Babati,  Babati Mjini , Hanang , Simanjiro and Kiteto. Babati town is the headquarters of the region.  

Manyara region is a Rift Valley region that takes its name from Lake Manyara, which is one of the major lakes formed in ancient times by the Great Rift Valley. It is the only region in Tanzania that is bisected into two by the Great Rift Valley. Manyara also houses Rift valley lakes such as Manyara, Burunge, Babati and Balangda.  These lakes are a major wildlife water source and are therefore, an essential part of the wildlife ecosystems of Manyara and Tarangire National Parks.

Agriculture, livestock keeping, Fishing and mining are the main economic activities in Manyara Region. Other sources of income are from tourism to the Tarangire National Park  and Lake Manyara National Park.

 

Tourist attractions in Manyara region:

  • Lake Manyara national park. Lake Manyara National Park is one of Africa’s alkaline water lakes. The park is among the smallest park inside Tanzania, it features an amazing variety of plants, landscape as well as wild animals, and it is also famous for its tree climbing lion’s population. In addition, Lake Manyara is the country’s largest breeding ground for thousands of flamingos.
  • Tarangire National Park. Tarangire is part of a famous larger ecosystem known as Tarangire – Manyara ecosystem. Tarangire National park is famous for its high density of elephants and baobab trees. During the high season (dry season) Visitors to the park can expect to see large herds of thousands of zebra, wildebeest and Cape buffalo. Other common resident animals found in Tarangire national park include waterbuck, giraffe, dik dik, impala, eland, Grant's gazelle, vervet monkey, banded mongoose, and olive baboon.
