Maswa Game Reserve

Maswa Game Reserve is one of the famous game reserves in Tanzania, located in Meatu, Itilima and Bariadi districts in Simiyu Region. Maswa Game Reserve was established in 1962 and it covers an area of 2,200 km2. Maswa game reserve borders the world’s famous national park, the Serengeti National Park from where it attracts wild animals from the park during dry season.

The reserve also plays a major part to wildebeests seeking pasture and calving when plains of Serengeti National Park are dry. After calving, the wildebeests continue northwards to Maasai-Mara Game Reserve in Kenya in their annual migration looking for pasture.

The land in Maswa game reserve contains Kopjes, thorn scrub and acacia woodland and grassland with areas with short grass plains.

Maswa has plenty and varied wildlife that includes big game, it contains impressive populations of buffalo, lion, roan antelope, Cokes hartebeest, impala, leopard, Wildebeest, elephant, Coke's hartebeest, Thomson and Robert's gazelle, zebra, dik dik, baboon, eland, warthog, topi, hyena and different bird species.
